Such is the quality of the tea grown on the island “Ceylon Tea” is still the global brand name for the tea although the island became a republic and changed its name from Ceylon to Sri Lanka half a century ago.

The commercial cultivation of tea began on the island when a young Scotsman by the name of James Taylor successfully trialed planting 19 acres of tea at the Loolecondera Estate in Kandy in 1852.

The tea picking experience is not to be missed, it gives one a deeper understanding of how one’s refreshing cup of tea is made, the efforts that go into it, and of course an insight into mainly the women young and old who pluck those tea leaves and their life and living conditions.

Each batch of tea must be taste-tested, like wine tasting and you’ll get a quick masterclass on what to look for from your knowledgeable guide. The taste of tea like wine very much depends on the acidity of the soil, the elevation it is grown, the amount of sunlight it gets even the wind it gets exposed to. End the day with a refreshing cup of Ceylon Tea straight from the plantation and an appreciation for the hard work that goes into every cup of your humble tea.
