Colombo

Overview

The Colombo port area was made the capital city in 1815 during the British administration and it became the commercial hub of the island today it has a population of around 6 million in Colombo and Greater Colombo.

There are Dutch, Victorian, and Edwardian architectural buildings that still stand majestically in the heart of the city of Colombo to remind us of the colonial era.

There is a multitude of fantastic restaurants and shopping areas. Walking tours of Colombo are also available.

There is a long and wide green patch called “Galle Face Green” at the seafront, near the old parliament – perfect for a stroll in the evening to watch the sunset and mingle with the locals or even snack on some street food on the move. “Galle Face Green” is a historical place from a sports point of view, where games like cricket, football, rugby, hockey, and golf were initially introduced to the island in the 1830s.

The second oldest Royal Golf Club outside Britain is in Colombo - the Royal Colombo Golf Club -is one of a handful of golf courses on the island.

Colombo is about 45 minutes on the Expressway southbound from Bandaranaike International Airport, and a good starting point to spend a night in if you are heading towards the south and southwest of the island.
