Captivating culture and spirituality: Vesak
Saturday 4th May 2024
"Vesak," observed on the Day of the Full Moon in May, holds profound significance for millions of Buddhists globally. This sacred occasion marks pivotal moments in the life of Buddha, dating back over two and a half millennia. It commemorates his birth, enlightenment, and passing, all occurring on this auspicious day.
Recognized as the paramount event in the Buddhist calendar, Vesak aligns with the ancient Indian month of "Wesak." Buddhism, one of humanity's oldest faiths, has endured through centuries, enriching spiritual traditions worldwide.
In Sri Lanka, Vesak manifests as a two-day public holiday, resonating with vibrant displays of reverence. Adorned in pristine white attire, devout Buddhist Singhala devotees flock to temples, bearing offerings and engaging in prayerful contemplation. Streets, towns, and villages come alive with ornate decorations, including colourful lanterns and towering "Pandals," crafting a jubilant festival atmosphere.
